zigzag x1
Video 10:00 min

GITANJALI CULTURAL COMPLEX , Birbhum, Westbengalen, Indien

WINNER at the 23th season of Tagore International Film Festival (TIFF)
Category Experimental Film

The video work zigzag x1 is conceived as an installation. Played in a loop, variable as single or multichannel projection. The video should fit into the spatial conditions on the location. Fits also as an independent screening, in full length, or as an abbreviated excerpt.

Black and white surfaces, zigzag stripes and lines meander endlessly on a wall. Constant movement and change in varying dynamics determine the flow: on the projection surface, the patterns move in continuous movements towards the outer sides; the arrangements of the elements shift continuously from right to left – vertically and horizontally – from top to bottom and vice versa. Each structure and sequence results from the previous one and is based on a self-generating musical composition.

The video was created on the occasion of the group exhibition “more than 8” in the HALLE ZOLLSTOCK (Cologne, Germany) 2020 – on the first and at the same time last day before the Corona shutdown. The performative event is based on the idea and realization of the artist Reni Scholz.
Behind a frontally illuminated canvas, the performer Britta Lieberknecht creates sculptural forms and structures by applying pressure from behind on the fabric. Body parts, imprints of objects and movements continuously generate new contrasts of form and light.
The video shows interwoven sequences that correspond to a sound collage by Beate Gördes and, as an overall composition, appears very meditative.
